The story
With Ian Gillan and Roger Glover from Episode Six, Deep Purple found the line-up that defined the band – and largely hard rock itself.
From 1970 to 1973 came In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, plus the live album Made in Japan. The battle between Gillan's screams, Blackmore's guitar and Lord's Hammond organ became the Purple sound.
The friction was as big as the success. Gillan and Glover left in 1973, but Mk II reunited in 1984 with Perfect Strangers – and one last time in 1992–93, before Blackmore left the band for good.
